The NEVADA ROCK ART FOUNDATION uses contributions to aid its documentation
and preservation program. Although it may not be possible
to physically preserve all rock art sites, they can be saved
for posterity by recording them in the field, and these data
can be used for education, research, publication, analysis
and legal protection for years to come.
Public
education programs provide a further conservation tool by
alerting the public to the consequences of their impact on
sites. Active research and professional publication allows
the heritage significance of Nevada's rock art to be brought
to the attention of a wider audience.
These
sites contain images of great beauty and artistic merit and
are often located in spectacular landscapes. The original
cultural significance of this ancient art made by Nevada's
prehistoric and historic peoples is poorly understood though
most theories concur that this art reflects the rituals, beliefs
and practices of its makers.
