The NEVADA ROCK ART FOUNDATION is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that actively promotes the protection and public awareness of rock art in Nevada and surrounding areas. The Mission of the NEVADA ROCK ART FOUNDATION is to identify, document, preserve, and protect rock art in Nevada and surrounding areas. This mission includes promoting public awareness and appreciation of Nevada rock art and other heritage resources. The NEVADA ROCK ART FOUNDATION implements its mission through strategic planning to seek funds and use contributions to:

•  Identify sites at risk
  • Create an active program of field recording and training  
•  Promote involvement in preservation and research by local Native American communities  
•  Monitor sites throughout the State
  
•  Develop research to broaden knowledge of the date and original cultural significance of rock art  
•  Educate the public and provide training  
•  Consolidate existing archival records  
•  Establish and maintain a permanent archive of rock art documentation and relevant rock art literature  
•  Work cooperatively with land managers to assist them to record and protect rock art sites  
•  Engage the services of specialist conservators and other professionals to repair modern vandalism or other significant impacts on rock art  
•  Collaborate with the Nevada State Museum, University of Nevada and others to ensure our research is published and shared with the academic community and the public  

The NEVADA ROCK ART FOUNDATION uses contributions to aid its documentation and preservation program. Although it may not be possible to physically preserve all rock art sites, they can be saved for posterity by recording them in the field, and these data can be used for education, research, publication, analysis and legal protection for years to come.

Public education programs provide a further conservation tool by alerting the public to the consequences of their impact on sites. Active research and professional publication allows the heritage significance of Nevada's rock art to be brought to the attention of a wider audience.

These sites contain images of great beauty and artistic merit and are often located in spectacular landscapes. The original cultural significance of this ancient art made by Nevada's prehistoric and historic peoples is poorly understood though most theories concur that this art reflects the rituals, beliefs and practices of its makers.
