Volunteer Training in Documentation Techniques
If you've ever wanted to help archaeologists to document rock art sites, now is your chance to learn how at a two-day workshop! NRAF Members learn the fundamentals of rock art research around the world and are introduced to the rock art here in Nevada. Also discussed are requirements to volunteer for a Federal Land Management agency and how to become involved in Site Stewardship. Then, the basics of site documentation, which meets or exceeds standards set by the International Federation of Rock Art Organizations, are discussed. By the end of the day, participants have a basic understanding of the potential and the process of rock art documentation. On the second day, participants go into the field to put what they've learned into practice.

25- 06/1/08	Lagomarsino Documentation Project Northern Nevada - The Lagomarsino Canyon Petroglyph Documentation Project is a multiyear recording project at one of Nevada's most spectacular rock art sites and is carried out by the Nevada Rock Art Foundation in partnership with Storey County. The site is one of the largest sites in Nevada and contains thousands of abstract motifs that are breathtaking in their beauty and complexity. This is the fifth year of the documentation project and is the first of many field sessions planned for Lagomarsino in 2008. To date, nearly 2,000 rock art panels have been recorded by the Foundation at Lagomarsino. Volunteers are needed to help the task of making a complete archaeological inventory of the site. The project is open to all members of the Foundation who have been certified in its documentation procedures, or members who have completed the one-day classroom training session and now need to be trained in the field to complete their certification. Volunteers must provide and arrange for their own accommodation; we recommend staying at the Western Village Inn-Casino, Sparks, Nevada (for reservations call 775 331-1069) where the Foundations field office will be based. The field crew is limited to 10 volunteers per day, so not all the days you wish to work may be available. 24	Mt Irish Archaeological District Tour Mt Irish, Lincoln County - As part of Archaeology Awareness Month, NRAF will be leading a tour of the rock art of the Mt Irish Archaeological District, Lincoln County. This area is home to some of the most spectacular and beautiful rock art in Nevada, and is one of the type-sites for the distinctive and intriguing Pahranagat Representational Style. With former BLM archaeologist Mark Henderson as your guide, you will learn about the archaeology and rock art of the Mt Irish area, benefiting from Mark's extensive knowledge and experience of the Mt Irish area. Dr. Bahn has published widely on various archaeological topics, including "Archaeology: Theories, Methods and Practice" coauthored with Professor Lord Renfrew of Kaimsthorn, one of the worlds most respected archaeologists, but is perhaps best known for his popular publications on the painted caves of Europe, where he did his doctoral research. The author has also graciously agreed to a book signing prior to his presentation. Seating is limited - NRAF members receive a discount on tickets. 22	NRAF Lecture Series Reno - Location TBA - Ken Hedges was in the forefront of research on the relationship between rock art and shamanism. He began this longterm research project in 1976, long before the theme became the focus of other researchers. His careful analysis of southern California ethnography has given him significant insight into the complex relationship between shamanistic ritual practices and the production of rock art.

1	ROCKIN' ART SHOW! Reno - The Artists Co-Op of Reno (627 Mill St) is again hosting our 5th Annual ROCIN' ART SHOW at 627 Mill Street in Reno. This annual event has grown every year as a part of Reno's month-long celebration of the arts in July. The show will run from June 26 through July 31 with the reception being held on Sunday July 1, 2007 from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm, when visitors to the gallery will get a chance to meet the artists. This year more than 100 artists will be participating and the artwork runs the spectrum from glass to silk to basalt! The Nevada Rock Art Foundation receives a 20% donation of all sales made during the month-long show ... so come on out and support the arts and the NRAF!
